About Squires Lake Trail

Just outside the border of Whatcom County is a hidden gem of hiking and trail running!

Squires Lake Trail is a magnificent example of the beauty of the Northwest. Just South off of exit 242 is a gravel parking area on the left side of Hwy 99. The initial ascent is a no nonsense climb up the rock face that will get your heart pumping and make the top that much more enjoyable.  As you near the top of the switchbacks, you can hear the rush of a waterfall and the lake comes into view to your left.

I like to follow the lake loop to the left. The views are unmatched and it is the perfect blend of hills and flat. The loop borders the lake for a while and then climbs up towards the South Ridge Trail. I like to push it on the uphill and recharge on the downhill back towards the lake. This is an excellent place to train for any road or trail race.

The best thing about Squires Lake is the versatility. If you’re coming for a run, each lap around the lake is about a mile so you can lap to your heart’s content. For those who want a more incredible view, Beaver Pond Loop and the South Ridge Trail offer incredible views of the Alger Valley and Blanchard Mountain. It’s not uncommon to see horses and their riders climbing up Beaver Pond Loop and dogs trotting along next to their trail running owners.

If you’re looking for a new place for a workout or an evening stroll with your honey, this is a great place to go!
